Mudavadi Questions Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Funding, Drags Uhuru Kenyatta Into Political Debate

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has challenged Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to explain the financial muscle behind the rapidly growing Linda Mwananchi Movement (LMM), raising questions about the people financing its political activities.

Speaking during a public gathering in Vihiga, Mudavadi questioned how the new political outfit was managing its nationwide mobilisation despite reportedly not qualifying for government funding through the Political Parties Fund.

The Prime CS argued that establishing and maintaining a political organisation requires substantial financial resources, particularly when it comes to running offices, organising meetings and coordinating activities across different regions.

Drawing from his experience as the former leader of Amani National Congress (ANC), Mudavadi recalled the difficulties he encountered while maintaining an independent party.

He disclosed that ANC received approximately KSh25 million in annual state funding but still struggled to meet its operational expenses, forcing him to use personal money to support its activities before eventually merging with President William Ruto’s UDA.

Mudavadi’s remarks appeared to question how Sifuna’s movement was sustaining its growing political engagements without similar financial support.

He also brought former President Uhuru Kenyatta into the discussion, suggesting that influential individuals could be providing financial assistance to the emerging political movement.

The Prime CS maintained that Kenyans deserved clarity about the financial interests behind political organisations seeking public support.

His comments have introduced another dimension to the growing political contest surrounding Linda Mwananchi, which has attracted attention following its high-profile activities and efforts to build a wider opposition platform.

The remarks are likely to intensify debate over political financing and the influence of wealthy individuals in Kenya’s evolving opposition politics.
