Abdulswamad Nassir: ODM Ready to Take Up Deputy Presidency After Standing With Kenya

Mombasa Governor and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Deputy Party Leader Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has reaffirmed the party’s determination to secure the Deputy President’s position, saying ODM is ready to take on greater responsibility in the country’s leadership.

Nassir said the party had stood with Kenya during a difficult political moment and was now prepared to play an even bigger role in shaping the country’s future.

His remarks underline ODM’s growing ambition to secure a stronger position in the next government as political discussions ahead of the 2027 General Election gather momentum.

The Mombasa governor maintained that ODM has experienced leaders capable of serving at the highest levels of government. He argued that the party’s contribution to the country’s political journey should be recognised in any future political arrangement.

The Deputy Presidency has increasingly become a major talking point within ODM, with several leaders insisting that the party must receive a meaningful share of leadership if it supports President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

At the October 31 political gathering at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi, Nassir challenged supporters to recognise the calibre of leaders within ODM who could serve as Deputy President. Supporters responded by chanting the name of Mining Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho.

Nassir’s latest position also comes at a time when ODM is navigating its future political direction following the death of its longtime leader, Raila Odinga.

The party now faces the task of maintaining unity, strengthening its national influence and negotiating favourable terms ahead of the next election.

Whether ODM will ultimately secure the Deputy Presidency remains dependent on future coalition negotiations. However, Nassir’s message is clear: the party believes its political contribution deserves recognition, and it is ready for greater responsibility in Kenya’s leadership.
