NEWS JUST IN:Former Governor Ferdinand Waititu Handed Heavy Jail Term

In a landmark anti-corruption ruling that has sent shockwaves through the country’s political class, former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu faces up to 13 years in prison after being convicted over the irregular award of a Sh588 million county road tender.

The decision, delivered by the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court, marks a dramatic fall from grace for the politician who once held immense sway in Mount Kenya politics.

Chief Magistrate Harrison Barasa handed down heavy monetary fines totaling millions of shillings, ordering that failure to pay the court penalties will force the former governor to serve a long jail term.

The high-profile court case revolved around a controversial road construction contract awarded during Waititu’s tenure, where millions of public funds were siphoned through kickbacks and fraudulent procurement processes.

The magistrate ruled that public officials entrusted with county resources must be held accountable for betraying the public trust.

The court also convicted Waititu’s co-accused, including close family members and corporate entities that were fined and instructed to pay their penalties.

In addition to the prison terms and fines, the court barred the former county boss from holding any public office for the next 10 years.

Waititu’s defense team indicated plans to appeal the sentencing, claiming the punishment is overly harsh for a first-time offender.

However, anti-corruption activists have welcomed the strict ruling as a crucial win in fighting grand corruption and restoring accountability across devolved government units.
