Wamalwa Hints on When United Opposition Will Unveil 2027 Presidential Candidate

Kenya’s opposition coalition could announce its presidential candidate on Christmas Day as leaders intensify negotiations ahead of the 2027 General Election, Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has hinted.

Wamalwa shared the possible timeline after opposition leaders visited former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri on Monday, October 26, amid growing discussions about building a united political front against President William Ruto.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Wamalwa said consultations among coalition partners had progressed, creating room for discussions about when the presidential flagbearer would be announced.

He compared the negotiations to assembling a football team, explaining that political parties must first agree on their common strategy before determining who will captain the team and occupy other key positions.

The DAP-K leader expressed hope that intensified negotiations between now and December would produce an announcement he described as a Christmas present to Kenyans.

However, the proposed timeline comes amid mounting pressure from opposition politicians who want the coalition to settle on its candidate earlier to provide direction and prevent uncertainty from weakening its preparations.

Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has previously pushed for the immediate endorsement of Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, arguing that the coalition should not delay its decision.

Gachagua, however, has maintained that announcing the candidate too early could expose the individual to political pressure and interference from Ruto’s administration. He has cited former President Mwai Kibaki’s 2002 victory after being unveiled relatively close to election day as an example of why the opposition still has time.

Meanwhile, signs of internal divisions threaten the coalition’s unity. Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i and People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua have continued pursuing independent political campaigns, raising questions about their commitment to a joint arrangement.

The proposed Christmas deadline could therefore test whether opposition leaders can reconcile competing ambitions and agree on a common candidate before the 2027 contest.
