MP Mutuse Says UDA Stopped Distributing Caps and T-Shirts in Ukambani Rallies Over Fears of Burning
Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse has said the United Democratic Alliance party stopped distributing caps, T-shirts and scarves during President William Ruto’s rallies in Ukambani region.
According to Mutuse, the decision was made after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua allegedly mobilised Kenyans to burn UDA merchandise after Ruto’s rallies.
Mutuse claimed that UDA merchandise was burnt down in Kaiti and Mbooni constituencies in Makueni County. He said the incidents forced the party to reconsider issuing branded materials during rallies in the region.
The MP was speaking during a political engagement where he addressed recent political activities in Ukambani. He said the party did not want to see its merchandise destroyed after spending resources to produce and distribute it.
President Ruto has been holding rallies across the country as part of his development tour and engagement with residents. During such rallies, UDA merchandise is usually distributed to supporters who attend the events.
Mutuse alleged that after the rallies in Ukambani, some individuals were mobilised to collect and burn the merchandise as a political statement. He linked the alleged mobilisation to Gachagua, who has been holding separate political meetings in various parts of the country.
The burning of political party merchandise has previously sparked debate over political tolerance and freedom of association. Political analysts have called for peaceful political competition and respect for different party affiliations.
By the time of publishing, Gachagua had not publicly responded to the claims made by MP Mutuse.
Residents in Ukambani have continued to call for development-focused politics that address local challenges such as water, infrastructure and youth employment.
