Didmus Barasa Withdraws Support for Moses Wetang’ula Ahead of 2027 Elections

Fresh political divisions have emerged in Bungoma County after Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa publicly withdrew his support for National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, raising questions about possible changes in the region’s political alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.

In a statement released on Monday, October 26, 2026, Barasa declared that he could no longer support Wetang’ula’s political direction in Bungoma, arguing that the county needed a different approach to leadership, development and political representation.

The legislator, however, clarified that his disagreement with Wetang’ula was confined to local politics and would not affect his support for President William Ruto’s broad-based government.

Barasa accused Wetang’ula of maintaining conflicting political loyalties, alleging that while the Speaker supports Ruto nationally, his brother, Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, continues to pursue political interests associated with opposition figures.

Wanyonyi has been linked to Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement, which has attracted attention as political leaders position themselves ahead of the next elections.

Barasa’s remarks have sparked questions about Wetang’ula’s political relationships and the direction of Bungoma’s leadership. However, the allegations do not independently establish that the Speaker is secretly supporting Sifuna’s political camp.

The Kimilili MP also criticised what he described as family-based political succession, insisting that leadership positions should be determined by merit, competition and voters’ preferences rather than family connections.

He further raised concerns about the distribution of resources under a memorandum of understanding, alleging that individuals with close family connections had benefited disproportionately. These claims remain unverified allegations made by Barasa.

Despite the fallout, Barasa reaffirmed his commitment to Ruto and indicated that he would strengthen the United Democratic Alliance’s grassroots networks in Bungoma ahead of his anticipated gubernatorial bid in 2027.

The disagreement comes as political competition intensifies across Western Kenya. Wetang’ula’s response to the allegations could influence efforts to maintain political unity in Bungoma as leaders prepare for the next General Election.
