REVEALED: What Church Members and Elders Disagreed About Before Boarding the Bus That Killed 24

New details have emerged about a disagreement among worshippers before they boarded the bus that later crashed near Mtito Andei, claiming 24 lives.

The group of 47 worshippers had travelled from Mombasa to Lugari in Kakamega County to attend their bishop’s burial. However, tensions arose when members differed over whether to begin their journey home on Saturday evening or wait until Sunday morning.

According to survivor Michael Musala, some members proposed spending the night in Lugari before travelling back the following morning.

They felt that resting after the burial would allow them to begin the long journey while fresh.

However, the group’s elders dismissed the suggestion and insisted that everyone follow the original travel plans by leaving on Saturday evening.

Musala, who is recovering at Makindu Level Four Hospital, explained that those who wanted to postpone the journey were outnumbered by members who supported the elders’ decision.

Their request was therefore rejected, and preparations for departure continued.

Despite serving as the group’s secretary, Musala revealed that he nearly missed the bus as worshippers hurried to board before setting off.

The group eventually left Lugari for Mombasa at approximately 4pm on Saturday.None of the passengers knew that the journey would end in a devastating road accident.

The collision occurred along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Mtito Andei in Makueni County during the early hours of Sunday. The crash claimed 24 lives and left several passengers injured.

Survivors were rushed to hospital, with several receiving treatment at Makindu Level Four Hospital.

Meanwhile, the bodies of those who died were taken to the Mtito Andei Hospital mortuary.

Beyond his physical injuries, Musala is struggling with the loss of his sister, who died in the accident.

He remembered her as a loving woman who had cared for him like a mother throughout his childhood.

The tragedy has plunged families and fellow worshippers into mourning.

What began as a journey to honour their late bishop ended in a devastating loss that has shaken the entire community.

As survivors continue recounting their experiences, the disagreement over the departure time has become one of the key incidents remembered from the hours before the fatal journey.
