Laugher In Church as Ukambani MP Alleges More Donkeys than People in His Region

Mwingi West Member of Parliament Charles Ngusya Nguna, popularly known as CNN among his supporters, caused laughter at a church service in Mwingi, Kitui County, after revealing that donkeys in his constituency are more than the people.

The MP made the remarks on Sunday while addressing worshippers in the presence of President William Ruto, who is in Ukambani for a three-day development tour. Speaking in Kiswahili, he said, “Ukitembea Mwingi, utapata punda ni wengi kuliko watu, tunaomba rais tupate maji.”

Explaining why the animals are so numerous, Ngusya said donkeys are widely used for domestic work in the area, mostly to carry water over long distances. Residents of the semi-arid region often travel for hours to fetch water, and donkeys have become an important part of daily life for many households.

His light-hearted remark drew laughter from the congregation, but it carried a serious message about the water challenges facing Mwingi residents. The legislator used the moment to make a direct appeal to the Head of State to help end the shortages.

Ngusya urged the President to ensure water is pumped from Kindaruma Phase 2 so that the long-standing problem of water scarcity in the area can finally be addressed. He said a reliable supply would ease the burden on families, especially women and children who spend a large part of their day looking for water.

The appeal came at an event where local leaders also thanked the President for development projects in the region, including road construction in Mwingi. Leaders from the area have been using the President’s visit to push for projects they say will improve livelihoods.

President Ruto’s tour of Ukambani is expected to include the launch and inspection of several development projects. Whether the President will respond to the water request during the tour remains to be seen, but the MP’s humorous yet pointed plea has already become one of the talking points from the Mwingi church service.
