22 Lives Lost: What Really Happened in the Mtito Andei Crash

A Sunday morning journey along Kenya’s busy Nairobi–Mombasa Highway turned into a devastating tragedy after a church bus collided head-on with a lorry at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, leaving at least 22 people dead and several others injured.

The passengers were reportedly returning from a burial ceremony when tragedy struck.

Initial reports indicated that 20 people died at the scene, while two more victims later succumbed to injuries while receiving medical attention, pushing the reported death toll to 22.

The scale of the collision left the vehicles badly damaged and emergency responders faced a grim scene as they worked to assist those who survived.

Sixteen survivors were rushed to Makindu Sub-County Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital for treatment.

Their survival has offered a small measure of hope amid the overwhelming grief, although authorities had not immediately released details on the individual conditions of those injured.

The identities of the deceased had also not been publicly confirmed at the time of reporting, leaving families and friends anxiously awaiting official information as efforts to establish the victims’ identities continued.

Preliminary findings by the National Transport and Safety Authority indicate that improper overtaking may have contributed to the crash.
