Sakaja In Trouble As Babu Owino Exposes Evidence Of Who Approved The Eastleigh Building

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has accused Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja of lying to Kenyans about the building that collapsed in Eastleigh. According to Owino, the governor claimed the structure had no approval, yet he says documents show the construction was cleared during Sakaja’s time in office.

Owino has posted what he describes as the approval for the building, which he says was issued on February 13, 2024. He says the document proves the project got the green light from City Hall, contrary to earlier statements that the developer had gone ahead without permission. The authenticity of the document has not been independently confirmed.

The legislator went further and alleged that the approval was granted after the governor received a bribe of Sh120 million. He did not provide evidence of any payment in his post, and the claim remains an allegation. Owino also called Sakaja incompetent and said he must take responsibility for the tragedy.

The accusation follows a week of finger pointing over who should answer for the collapse. Earlier, Government Spokesperson Charles Owino said the actual owner of the building is deceased, while another politician claimed he had once tried to stop construction but was rebuked. The new claims add to the confusion over what exactly happened before the building came down.

Nairobi residents have been demanding clarity on how approvals are handled in the city, especially for tall buildings in crowded neighbourhoods like Eastleigh. If the approval was indeed issued in 2024, questions will be asked about what inspections followed and who allowed work to continue. Investigators are expected to examine the paperwork and the county’s role as they seek to establish responsibility for the disaster.
