Heavy Rain Expected in Most Parts of Kenya starting On This Date as Kenya Met Issues Warning

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has warned residents in more than 40 counties to prepare for heavy rainfall, possible flash floods and strong winds beginning Sunday, October 25, 2026.

In its latest weather advisory, the department said rainfall exceeding 20mm within 24 hours could occur in several parts of the country, including sections of Nairobi, the Coast, Northeastern Kenya, the Central Highlands and areas west and east of the Rift Valley.

Counties listed in the forecast include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Kisii, Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Marsabit, Isiolo, Migori, Nyamira, Bungoma, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Bomet, Kiambu, Embu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Uasin Gishu, Nakuru, Kericho, Laikipia, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Narok, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, West Pokot, Baringo and Kajiado.

Parts of Nairobi, Taita Taveta, Kitui, Machakos and Makueni are also expected to experience the adverse weather conditions.

KMD cautioned that strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots, equivalent to approximately 46 kilometres per hour, could affect coastal, eastern and northern areas.

The department warned that flash floods may occur even in places that do not receive heavy rainfall directly, particularly in low-lying areas and locations downstream. Motorists and pedestrians were urged to exercise caution due to possible flooding and reduced visibility.

During thunderstorms, members of the public were advised to avoid standing beneath trees or near grilled windows because of the danger posed by lightning.

The department’s seven-day forecast, covering 9am on October 25 to 9am on November 1, projects cumulative rainfall ranging from 1mm to 100mm in different parts of Kenya.

Meanwhile, high temperatures are expected to persist in some northern areas, prompting residents to drink enough water and limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

KMD also warned of ocean waves exceeding two metres on Sunday, October 25, advising people involved in maritime activities to remain cautious.

The advisory comes as Kenya approaches the October-to-December short-rains season, which can bring relief from dry conditions but also increase the risk of flooding and damage to infrastructure in vulnerable areas.
