Ruto’s Government on Spotlight as Ndindi Nyoro Issues Late Night Statement on Fuel Price Increase
A fresh political storm is brewing over Kenya’s rising fuel prices, with Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro questioning whether motorists are being subjected to a carefully calculated political game before the government announces a possible price reduction.
In a late-night statement, Nyoro alleged that the latest increase could trigger public outrage before the government moves to lower prices by approximately KSh 10 per litre through a subsidy. He suggested that the timing and amount of any reduction could depend on the level of public pressure.
Nyoro also accused President William Ruto of prioritising political appearances and public declarations over addressing deeper questions surrounding the country’s fuel pricing system.
The lawmaker raised several concerns that he believes require urgent answers, particularly regarding the government-to-government fuel importation arrangement and allegations of financial benefits linked to the system. These claims have yet to be independently established.
Among the questions he posed was why importers’ and distributors’ margins had reportedly increased by 12 per cent since May, despite what he described as a decline in the landed cost of diesel.
Nyoro further claimed that diesel’s landed cost had fallen from KSh 167 per litre in May to KSh 138, yet consumers were now paying more at the pump. He also compared international oil prices during earlier import periods with more recent figures, demanding an explanation for the apparent contradiction.
The MP questioned the government’s handling of Turkana’s oil resources, adding another layer to his criticism of the administration’s energy policies.
His remarks have placed renewed attention on fuel pricing transparency, the cost of living and the need for clear public explanations.
As transport and commodity costs continue to concern households and businesses, Nyoro’s challenge raises a central question: will the government provide detailed answers to these concerns, or will the debate remain dominated by political accusations?
