Ruto to Share Podium With Uhuru and Opposition Leaders Today in a Gathering That Has Drawn Attention

President William Ruto and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta are expected to join political leaders in Bondo, Siaya County, on Thursday, October 15, to mark one year since Raila Odinga’s death.

The memorial is scheduled to take place at Migwena Cultural and Sports Ground. Raila’s family has invited leaders from across the political divide to honour the former Prime Minister and remember his contribution to Kenya’s political history.

The anticipated attendance of Ruto and Uhuru has drawn attention because the two leaders have taken different political positions in recent years. Their presence at the same gathering would bring together figures whose relationships with Raila and his political movement have shaped national politics for decades.

Other leaders expected at the commemoration include Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga. However, being invited does not necessarily mean every leader will attend.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has indicated that he will not attend the official memorial. He has criticised what he views as attempts to use Raila’s legacy for political purposes and said he would honour his longtime political ally privately.

Raila died in India on October 15, 2025, aged 80. He spent decades in public life, campaigning for multiparty democracy and constitutional reforms and serving as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.

The anniversary comes as political parties and leaders prepare for the 2027 General Election. Raila’s death left questions about the future of ODM and the wider opposition, with leaders continuing to debate the party’s direction and possible alliances.

The family has called for peaceful commemorations centred on Raila’s life and public service. The Bondo gathering is expected to bring relatives, supporters and political leaders together to remember one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
