“Kenyans Will Not Accept Your Increased Fuel Prices” Mt Kenya MP Tells EPRA

Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has warned the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) against increasing fuel prices, insisting that Kenyans will not accept higher costs for petrol, diesel and kerosene.

In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, October 14, Nyoro criticised the regulator amid uncertainty over the latest monthly fuel price review after a scheduled press conference failed to take place at the announced time.

The legislator accused EPRA of engaging in prolonged consultations ahead of a possible increase, warning that the government should not impose additional costs on consumers already facing economic pressure.

β€œEPRA and associates, as you pretend to consult till late to purport to increase fuel prices, know that Kenyans will not accept that nonsense. Do not dare,” Nyoro stated.

He also accused President William Ruto of benefiting from the country’s fuel crisis, raising concerns about alleged connections involving petroleum investments and oil resources in Turkana.

β€œWe cannot have a country where the President is benefiting from fuel crisis through fleecing Kenyans,” he said.

Nyoro further alleged that individuals linked to the country’s leadership had interests in Turkana oil and the Dangote East African Petroleum Refinery. However, he did not provide evidence to substantiate the allegations.

The MP called on the government to introduce measures to cushion motorists and households against rising petroleum costs.

Among his proposals were removing value-added tax (VAT) on fuel products, reducing fuel levies and introducing subsidies to keep pump prices affordable.

β€œYou had all the time to do this, don’t come with excuses,” he added, reiterating his warning to the regulator.

EPRA had scheduled a press briefing for 4:00 pm on Wednesday at its offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi, to address the October-November pricing review. However, the meeting did not take place at the announced time.

Under the outgoing September 15 to October 14 pricing schedule, the maximum pump prices in Nairobi stood at KSh214.03 per litre for petrol, KSh217.86 for diesel and KSh191.38 for kerosene.

The new prices had not been confirmed in the information available at the time of the scheduled briefing, leaving motorists awaiting an official announcement on whether the regulator would raise or lower the cost of fuel.
