Ghana captain Sarah Nyarko was named Woman of the Match after playing a decisive role in the Black Princesses’ 3-1 victory over South Korea at the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup on Wednesday.
Nyarko capped an impressive individual performance by breaking the deadlock in the 52nd minute, firing a long-range effort past the South Korean goalkeeper to put Ghana ahead.
The midfielder’s goal proved crucial as the Black Princesses responded strongly after their opening 3-0 defeat to Ecuador, keeping their hopes of reaching the knockout stage alive.
Ghana doubled their advantage just three minutes later when Ivy Osei Owusu produced a composed finish, chipping the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Ruth Amponsah then extended Ghana’s lead in the 84th minute before South Korea scored a consolation goal through B. Ye-jo in the fifth minute of added time.
Nyarko’s contribution, particularly her goal that changed the course of the game, earned her the individual accolade at the end of the encounter.
The victory moved Ghana to three points from two matches in Group C, leaving them second in the standings behind Ecuador on goal difference.
The Black Princesses now face France in their final group game on Saturday, with victory potentially securing their place in the knockout stage.
Ghana are seeking to reach the knockout phase for the first time in eight appearances at the U20 Women’s World Cup.
