In Ghana, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) explained that its warning about using all legal mechanisms against planned private-sector participation in the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) does not necessarily entail taking the government to court. As MyJoyOnline reports, this was stated by TUC Deputy General Secretary Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo.

Not only court proceedings

According to Otoo, by legal action the union means traditional labour-relations tools available to the organized labour movement. He explained that these mechanisms are established means that trade unions can use to advance their position.

The TUC representative stressed that the congress does not see judicial coercion of the government into certain decisions as its main goal. Instead, trade unions are ready to use legitimate instruments provided for their activities.

Differences over ECG

The statement came amid differences between the TUC and the government over the proposed private-sector participation in ECG. The Trades Union Congress believes that the proposed model effectively means privatization of the company and had previously stated its intention to use legal mechanisms to oppose it.
