In South Africa, revenue at Sunbet, the online gambling unit of the Sun International group, rose by 35.5% in the six months to the end of June. Over the same period, Sun International’s total revenue increased by just over 7%, Daily Maverick reports.

Growth of the online segment

The author of the article views Sunbet’s results as an example of part of consumer spending shifting from physical settings to digital ones. At the same time, he cautions that the financial performance of the large, multi-business Sun International group cannot be explained solely by the development of online gambling.

Sun International also said it is considering reducing approximately 300 casino employees across the country. The article does not specify which establishments or positions these changes may affect.

More current news is available on the UA.News Telegram channel Telegram.

The Daily Maverick author notes that casinos can control the age of visitors at physical venues. In his view, it is more difficult to verify compliance with age restrictions in the online environment.

Sun City performance

Meanwhile, the Sun City complex increased revenue by 10%. Sun International CEO Ulrik Bengtsson, speaking on The Money Show, called Sun City unique in his experience of working in the hospitality industry in different countries.

The author also drew attention to growing interest in offline events after the pandemic. According to his observation, open-air concerts and mountain biking competitions attract large audiences, which may indicate demand for direct presence and communication.
