In South Africa, the author of Daily Maverick compared the approach of Springboks rugby captain Siya Kolisi and Shoprite retailer CEO Pieter Engelbrecht to communicating with supporters. In the author’s view, both emphasize the role of the team, leaders and the people who support their success.

Kolisi’s response after the match

The author of the piece attended the Springboks’ match against New Zealand’s All Blacks at FNB Stadium, where, according to him, there were another 85,975 spectators. After the game, Kolisi was asked at a press conference how he felt about being the Springboks captain with the most wins — 55.

As the publication describes, the rugby player did not focus on his personal achievement. He spoke about there being many leaders in the team and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be its captain. Kolisi also called representing the country a privilege, mentioned Soweto residents who could not afford to attend the match, and the importance of giving people hope.

Shoprite’s teams and customers

In its financial results statement, Shoprite highlighted the wording “Execution is a team sport” in a separate heading. According to the author, Engelbrecht had also emphasized the importance of teams and leaders in previous conversations and thanked the company’s customers.

The Daily Maverick author believes that regular attention to fans or customers helps create a sense of a personal connection with a team or company. At the same time, he notes that such an approach can be effective only if it is sincere.
