Ten years ago, Mcebisi Jonas, 66, was serving out his last few months as South Africa’s deputy finance minister under former president Jacob Zuma. He had blown the whistle on Zuma’s business associates, the Gupta brothers, who he said had offered him the job of finance minister and a R600m ($40m) reward. Zuma and the Guptas denied it, but a Public Protector’s report supported Jonas’ version.
