The Inspector General of Police, Christian Yohuno has provided an update on seven major operational successes and updates on significant cases across Ghana.
At a press briefing in Accra on Monday afternoon, the IGP said the major breakthroughs followed weeks of painstaking coordinated intelligence operations across the country.
This, he said, shows a commitment by the police to dismantle armed robbery networks, bringing perpetrators to justice, recovering illegal weapons, and ensuring security, law and order across the country.
They included the arrest of suspect behind the murder of Dr. Jesse Amuah and Mrs Elizabeth Amuah Esi, the couple who had been reported missing in April, 2026, suspects arrested for robbery attacks on banks and bank customers in Accra, Kumasi and Takoradi
The others are on the police dismantling robbery gang operating in Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp, and The Manso Enclave; five suspects arrested, three AK-47 rifles and 357 rounds of ammunition recovered.
The rest are the arrest of three suspects arrested in connection with robbery cases in Buipe, Tamale, and Mion, arrest of the mastermind behind the Buipe Cattle Market robbery and murder; the arrest of a gang leader and others in connection with robbery incident on the Enyirese-Sekyere road; one pump-action gun retrieved as well as the arrest of five suspects with eight AK 47 assault rifles retrieved.
Murder
Providing the update at the press briefing on Monday, the IGP said the police had arrested suspect Abraham Awundok, aged 32, in connection with the murder of Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were reported missing in April 2026.
“Investigations led police to suspect that the couple had been murdered. Following searches at their residence, other locations the couple were believed to have visited, and information from family members, their mortal remains were recovered and subsequently conveyed to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.
“Investigations later established that suspect Abraham Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, had murdered them,” he said.
He explained that the suspect also took their mobile phones, money, and private vehicle, and subsequently left Ghana for the United Arab Emirates.
He said the suspect was declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice.
“On August 30, 2026, the suspect was deported from Dubai to Ghana by a team of investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to the murder. The suspect remains in Police custody as investigations continue,” he said.
Bank robbers
Mr Yohuno said last month, the police foiled a robbery attempt on some banks at Labone, Accra. Following a swift response by officers from the office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP (SOA), two suspects were shot dead, one managed to escape and one was arrested.
“In the early part of April, 2026 my attention was drawn to some complaints about the ordeal customers who patronized various banks within the Greater Accra metropolis go through in the hands of some criminals. The information indicated that, there was a suspected robbery group who usually monitor their victims, use a master key to open vehicles of their victims and in some instances break into the vehicles. It was also believed that the group were also planning possible attacks on some banks,” he said.
Based on the information, he said “I tasked the office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP (SOA) to mount surveillance on the activities of the alleged criminal groups at various banks within Greater Accra and Tema Metropolis”.
Again, the IGP said June 9, 2026 and 11, 2026, the suspected robbery syndicate operated at some banks and were spotted on board a Toyota Highlander and Hyundai Tucson vehicles.
“On 17th May, 2026 the suspects robbed a lady at Agbamaame in Tema Community 2 of GHC 50,000.00. after she had withdrawn the said amount of money from a Bank at Tema.
On June 11, 2026 the gang, he said attacked a young man at Achimota at gun point after withdrawing some unspecified amount of money from the bank and was on his way home.
On 13/08/2026, the IGP said the surveillance team received reliable information that the robbery gang had been spotted at a bank on the Spintex Road and were heading towards Labone and Cantonments, Accra.
“The team monitored the suspects who were on board a black Hyundai Tucson with Registration number GS 7915-19 and a Toyota Highlander with Registration number GS 1434-18 Ash in colour. It was further gathered that the gang leaders by name Harrison Chinedu and Dan were always armed with pistols.
“The suspects were later spotted at Labone where they had positioned themselves strategically between the Zenith and GCB banks as well as the Ecobank and were monitoring the banks in their bid to launch an attack. However, following a swift response from the police team the planned attack was successfully foiled. Two of the suspects got shot one managed to escape and one was arrested,” he said.
Mr Tetteh Yohuno said a search conducted in the Toyota Highlander led to the retrieval of thirteen (13) different vehicle registration numbers and a Blow F90 Pistol.
He said investigation disclosed that the suspects bring the vehicles into the country and subsequently change the Nigerian number plates to Ghana vehicle number plates to undertake their criminal enterprise.
Accused Augustine Okechuku Maazi aged 49years, he said had been remanded by the Court and currently in lawful custody.
Police Dismantle Robbery Gang Operating in Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp, and the Manso Enclave.
Mr Tetteh Yohuno said the police through a series of sustained intelligence-led operations conducted between August and September 4, 2026, has dismantled a robbery gang responsible for a number of attacks targeting gold dealers’ shops, mining sites, and communities across Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp, and the Manso enclave.
The operations, he said resulted in the arrest of five suspects, the death of one suspect during the operation and the recovery of three (3) AK-47 assault rifles, five magazines, three hundred and fifty-seven (357) rounds of AK47 ammunition, and two vehicles.
Suspects arrested, he said include; Clinton Mawuli, aged 33, Richmond Mensah alias Master Abey, Daniel Sarfo alias Abedi, Prince Duker, one other suspect, Seidu Salifu, aged 40, who is linked to other robbery incidents, at Sakam near Offinso and was standing trial at the Nsuta Circuit Court in connection with the robbery of gold bullion at Offinso Abofour in July 2025 died during the operation.
He said on August 21, 2026, the Western Regional Command mounted a similar operation and arrested five suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta in the Western Region.
Investigations led to the arrest of suspects Amponsah, Christopher Seyiri alias “Cross and Die”, 47; Bashiru Ibrahim, 20; and Thomas Odoom alias “Wale”, 30, within the Agona Nkwanta area. Another suspect, Isaac Quayeson alias “Last Burial”, was arrested at Denkyira Kwaboso in the Western North Region. Police retrieved from the suspects, two locally manufactured pistols, five live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses.
He said special teams have been deployed to the affected areas to beef up security and ensure that community members continue to go about their business without any disturbances.
Police arrest three suspects in connection with robbery cases in Buipe, Tamale, and Mion
Mr Yohuno said the Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate had arrested three suspects in connection with a series of armed robberies in Buipe, Tamale, and Mion, involving a gang believed to operate with two AK-47 assault rifles and one pump-action gun along the Fumbisi-Yagaba road, and sold stolen motorbikes to contacts in Tamale and Savelugu.
He mentioned the suspects as Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus, and Abdul Rahman Haruna alias Saaga. The suspects are responsible for the robbery and murder of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso, near Damango junction, earlier in 2026.
All three suspects are in Police custody assisting investigations and efforts are actively underway to arrest the remaining accomplices and retrieve the weapons, and we will surely get them.
He said the Ghana Police Service has been on the lookout to arrest suspect Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu aged 60, the alleged mastermind behind the Buipe Cattle Market robbery and murder.
The suspect, he said who was also a trader in the market contracted robbers and gave them weapons to attack persons who carried large sums of money to trade at the Buipe market.
It will be recalled that on 29th June 2026, two mobile money vendors at the Buipe Cattle Market in the Savannah Region were attacked by armed robbers who made away with GH₵430,000.00.
Initial investigations led to the arrest of suspect Yacouba Oumar, 28 and the retrieval of one pump action gun, five live BB cartridges and one single barrel gun believed to have been used in the robbery.
On September 5, 2026, he said the Police Intelligence Directorate Headquarters received intelligence on the whereabouts of the suspect Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba. A team proceeded to the Cattle Market area and placed the suspect under surveillance.
The suspect, he said who attempted to escape got shot and later died from gunshot wounds. Intelligence operations have since been intensified in the area to ensure the safety of traders and other community members.
Police arrest gang leader
Again, he said the Ghana Police Service had arrested the gang leader and other persons in connection with the highway robbery on the Enyiresi-Sekyere stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway, which occurred on 18th August 2026, and has recovered the pump-action gun used in the robbery.
The suspects arrested during the investigation are Obotan, identified as the leader of the gang; his biological mother, who concealed the weapon used in the robbery in her house; Issaka Napson, identified as the supplier of weapons to the gang; Issaka Majeed; and Majeed Huzeifa.
He said a 14 year-old juvenile who served as a look out for the robbers was also arrested.
A search of the suspects’ residences led to the recovery of one ADLER pump-action gun (Serial No. 23GN-2302), one double-barrel gun, three single-barrel guns, two AA cartridges, one locally manufactured pistol, three cutlasses, two pairs of handcuffs, two jack knives, one canister of pepper spray, one pinch bar, one ammunition pouch, one tactical vest, and one unregistered Royal 125 motorbike.
All suspects are in Police custody assisting investigations, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the remaining suspect, Tanko.
Trading in weapons
Mr Yohuno said the Office of Special Operations Assistant to the inspector-general of police between the month of June, 2026 and July, 2026, following painstaking intelligence operations arrested five (5) suspects and retrieved the following exhibits eight AK 47 assault rifles, one smg rifle, two foreign pistols.
The suspects include, Munkaila Yusif alias Karyima, 34 years, Abdulai Fatawu Boniface, 32 years, Abdallah Imrana Gomda, 43 years, Sualesu Sheriffa, 20 years, Ibrahim adams alias Ibru, 35 years. They have since been remanded into lawful custody by the Accra Circuit Court which case has been adjourned to tuesday 8th september, 2026. Other suspects on the run are being pursued to face the law.
