The Institute of Packaging, Ghana (IOPG) has joined the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and packaging organisations worldwide to mark the inaugural World Packaging Day.
The annual international observance, being held for the first time on 6 September 2026, seeks to raise awareness of the role packaging plays in modern society, including food protection, economic development, sustainability, innovation and quality of life.
The WPO has identified four key themes for the inaugural celebration: packaging for progress, packaging against food waste, packaging and economic growth, and packaging and sustainability.
According to the WPO, packaging contributes to health and safety by protecting products, extending the shelf life of food and supporting access to essential goods. It also plays a role in supply chains, e-commerce, local production and international trade.
The organisation says the initiative will also promote greater use of circular economy approaches, eco-design and responsible material innovation.
In Ghana, the IOPG, a full member of the WPO, says it will mark the occasion with a Pan-African Knowledge-Sharing Forum later in September. The institute says the forum will be held in collaboration with the African Packaging Organisation.
The forum, themed “Shaping the Future of African Packaging through Innovation, Sustainability, and Intra-African Trade,” will focus on the role of packaging in supporting innovation, sustainable production and intra-African trade.
The IOPG says the forum will bring together policymakers, manufacturers, supply chain leaders, academics and other stakeholders to discuss ways of improving packaging and development standards.
It is expected to examine how improved packaging practices can support the competitiveness of Ghanaian and other African products in local and international markets.
The World Packaging Day will be marked globally through events, webinars, open houses and digital campaigns under the hashtag #WorldPackagingDay. The WPO has invited packaging associations, businesses, academic institutions and professionals to organise activities around the annual observance.
The IOPG is a professional body that promotes packaging practice in Ghana through training, advocacy, research, consultancy and technical advice. It was inaugurated in 2003 and is a full member of the WPO.
