The Judicial Service has clarified that recent comments by Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on the performance of some state-owned entities were made in good faith and were not intended to undermine the independence of the Judiciary.
The clarification follows mixed public reactions to observations made by the Chief Justice during an outreach engagement with some state institutions.
During visits to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) and the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), the Chief Justice questioned how Ghana’s state institutions had been managed over the past eight years, citing what he described as improvements in their performance.
The comments attracted criticism from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which described them as largely political and called on the Chief Justice to retract the remarks or resign.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, September 4, 2026, the Judicial Service said the observations were not intended to serve any purpose inimical to judicial independence.
“The observations were made in good faith, and were not intended to serve a purpose inimical to judicial independence,” the statement said.
The Judicial Service said the Chief Justice remained committed to upholding the integrity and independence of the Judiciary, as well as promoting justice and equality before the law.
