Somoco Ghana Limited, the sole authorised distributor of Bajaj Automobiles in Ghana, has launched its “Safe Journey” 2026 Road Safety Campaign in partnership with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Police Service.
The campaign, which will run until December 2026, is aimed at promoting safer road use and responsible riding, with particular focus on motorcycle and tricycle users.
It will include rider education, safety awareness, training and licensing support, promotion of helmets and protective equipment, and other activities aimed at encouraging responsible road-user behaviour.
Speaking at the launch, Managing Director of Somoco Ghana Limited, Nii Ayi Hyde, said the company’s responsibility as a major mobility provider extends beyond supplying motorcycles and tricycles to the Ghanaian market.
He said road safety must form part of the entire customer journey, from the showroom to the road, adding that Somoco was committed to helping build a culture where mobility and safety go hand in hand.
Mr Hyde said the campaign would support practical interventions including rider training, licensing support, safety education at the point of sale and the promotion of helmets and protective equipment.
He also called on riders, dealers, partners and the public to contribute to safer roads by taking responsibility for their actions.
Somoco’s Head of Marketing, Jerry Aye, said the company’s objective was to make safer choices easier for riders and encourage safety habits that would continue beyond the duration of the campaign.
Director-General of the NRSA, Abraham Amabila, commended Somoco for taking the lead in the road-safety initiative and described the campaign as an important strategic road-safety education effort.
He said road safety was a shared national responsibility and urged other corporate organisations to support efforts aimed at reducing road crashes.
The Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, also addressed the gathering and highlighted developments concerning the regulation and legalisation of commercial motorcycle operations, commonly referred to as Okada.
He stressed the importance of ensuring that such operations were conducted within an appropriate regulatory framework.
A major component of the campaign is the DVLA-certified Somoco Riding Academy, which is expected to provide rider training and licensing support, particularly for commercial riders.
The launch was attended by representatives of the NRSA, DVLA, Ministry of Transport, Ghana Police Service, transport operators, riders, ride-hailing partners and members of the media.
As part of its commitment to the campaign, Somoco Ghana donated a brand-new Bajaj Boxer 125 HD motorcycle to the NRSA to support the Authority’s road-safety activities.
The Safe Journey 2026 campaign will continue across Ghana until December, with activities focused on rider education, safety awareness, training and licensing support, donations and the promotion of responsible road-user behaviour.
