President John Dramani Mahama has arrived in Belgrade to attend a high-level meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
Mahama’s participation underscores Ghana’s historic role as a founding member of the movement, which was established in 1961 during the Cold War.
The meeting, hosted by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, is being held under the theme “The Legacy of Non-Alignment: Lessons for Today’s World.”
The gathering is expected to reaffirm the movement’s founding principles, including sovereign equality among nations, respect for territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs and stronger economic cooperation among developing countries.
More than 30 countries from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America are represented at the meeting.
With 120 member states, NAM is the largest international grouping outside the United Nations.
The movement was created during the Cold War as a platform for developing countries seeking an independent foreign policy rather than aligning with either the Western bloc led by the United States or the Soviet bloc.
Ghana was among the movement’s founding members, with its first president, Kwame Nkrumah, playing a prominent role in advancing the principles of non-alignment.
Nkrumah worked alongside Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and Indonesian President Sukarno in shaping the movement’s vision.
Mahama’s attendance in Belgrade comes as NAM seeks to reaffirm its relevance amid shifting global power dynamics and renewed calls for greater cooperation among developing countries.
