Mallam, Kaneshie, Dansoman, others face water cuts after major pipeline burst

Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced a temporary interruption in water supply to parts of Western Accra following damage to a major transmission pipeline serving several communities in the area.

The disruption occurred after a 500mm-diameter main pipeline was damaged during excavation works being carried out by AWERCO Construction Ltd.

According to GWL, the excavation works form part of a project to construct underground storm drains along the Kaneshie First Light–Hansonic Junction stretch.

The works resulted in the pipeline bursting, causing a significant volume of water to flood the excavation trench and making it difficult for engineers to immediately access the damaged section for repairs.

In a circular issued on Friday, August 28, management of GWL said its engineers and technical teams had been deployed to the site and were working around the clock to address the situation.

The technical teams are currently undertaking dewatering operations to remove the water that has accumulated in the trench following the burst.

GWL said preparatory work on one end of the damaged pipeline had already commenced while the dewatering exercise continued.

The company explained that gaining access to the affected section of the pipeline is necessary before the damaged portion can be repaired and water supply restored to the affected communities.

Several communities and neighbourhoods across Western Accra have been affected by the temporary interruption.

The affected areas include Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman Township and Chorkor, as well as surrounding communities.
