Banyana Banyana’s World Cup dream lives on.
South Africa beat old rivals Nigeria 2-1 in Casablanca on Thursday night, knocking the Super Falcons out of 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification and earning themselves another chance to reach the tournament in Brazil.
Thembi Kgatlana opened the scoring before captain Refiloe Jane doubled Banyana’s lead. Nigeria pulled one back from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time, with Jane sent off in the same sequence, but South Africa survived the final moments.
There is, however, one important catch: Banyana Banyana have not yet qualified for the World Cup. So what exactly did they qualify for, and how many more games stand between South Africa and Brazil? Here is the slightly complicated answer.
What happened in Banyana Banyana vs Nigeria?
After a goalless first half, Banyana finally broke through in the 56th minute. South Africa counterattacked quickly, with Hildah Magaia finding Thembi Kgatlana, who kept her composure to finish and put Banyana 1-0 ahead.
Nigeria pushed for an equaliser, but goalkeeper Kaylin Swart produced one of the biggest moments of the match when she denied Uchenna Kanu’s header in the 75th minute. CAF named Swart Woman of the Match.
Almost immediately, Banyana scored again. A loose ball fell to captain Refiloe Jane inside the penalty area in the 76th minute, and she fired through a crowd of players to make it 2-0.
Deep into stoppage time, a VAR review found Jane had handled the ball inside the penalty area. She received a second yellow card and was sent off, while substitute Christy Ucheibe converted the resulting penalty for Nigeria.
Suddenly it was 2-1, Banyana were down to 10 players, and Nigeria had one last chance to produce something dramatic.
Does beating Nigeria mean Banyana are going to the World Cup?
South Africa originally had the opportunity to qualify directly for the 2027 World Cup through the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The four teams that reached the WAFCON semi-finals received Africa’s four automatic World Cup places.
Banyana missed that opportunity after losing 2-1 to Morocco in the quarter-finals. Nigeria were also knocked out, losing 1-0 to Cameroon.
That created Thursday’s second-chance play-off. By beating Nigeria, South Africa have now secured one of Africa’s two places in the FIFA Women’s World Cup inter-confederation Play-Off Tournament. Ghana claimed Africa’s other place after coming from behind to beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 on Thursday.
What happens to Banyana Banyana next?
Now we enter the part FIFA appears to have designed for people who enjoy flow charts. The inter-confederation Play-Off Tournament is being played in two phases.
The first phase takes place in November and December 2026 at a centralised venue and features six countries. That group consists of:
- Two teams from Africa.
- Two teams from Asia.
- One team from Oceania
- One team from South America.
South Africa and Ghana now occupy Africa’s two places. The six teams will be ranked according to the FIFA Women’s World Ranking in place before the play-off draw. Only two of those six teams will advance. So Banyana still have another hurdle to clear before they even reach the final World Cup play-off stage.
And if South Africa survive that?
The two teams that progress from the first phase will advance to the final play-off phase in February 2027. They will then be joined by four teams that receive direct entry into that stage: two from Concacaf, one from South America and one from Europe.
That leaves six teams. Those six are divided into three play-off paths, with one knockout match deciding each path. The three winners take the final three places at the 32-team FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Who will Banyana play next?
The complete play-off field and draw still need to be settled, so South Africa do not yet know their next opponent.
What we do know is that Banyana and Ghana will represent Africa after both won their WAFCON World Cup play-offs on Thursday. Ghana recovered from an early Côte d’Ivoire penalty to win 2-1 through goals from Princess Marfo and Josephine Bonsu.
FIFA says teams in the first play-off phase will be ordered using the latest world rankings before the draw.
Why is beating Nigeria such a big result for Banyana?
The Super Falcons are the most successful team in African women’s football, with a record of 10 WAFCON titles. They have also historically been one of South Africa’s biggest obstacles on the continent. Nigeria ended Banyana’s hopes of reaching the Paris 2024 Olympics, winning their qualifying tie 1-0 on aggregate.
More recently, the Super Falcons beat South Africa 2-1 in the semi-finals of the previous WAFCON, before going on to win the tournament. This time, when elimination from World Cup qualifying was on the line, Banyana returned the favour.
Banyana lost their WAFCON opener against Tanzania, needed a stoppage-time goal to rescue a 2-2 draw against Côte d’Ivoire and then squeezed into the knockout rounds by beating Burkina Faso 1-0. Their hopes of automatic World Cup qualification appeared to disappear when Morocco knocked them out in the quarter-finals.
So are Banyana going to the 2027 World Cup?
South Africa have moved from the African qualifying stage into FIFA’s inter-confederation play-offs, where they will have to negotiate two more stages to claim one of the final three World Cup places.
That is not quite the simple plane ticket to Brazil Banyana would have wanted. But after losing their chance to qualify automatically against Morocco, being handed one final lifeline and then having to get past Nigeria to keep it… They will take it. Banyana Banyana 2. Nigeria 1. The World Cup dream survives.
