University Hospital Legon suspends outpatient and pharmacy services over GAUA strike

The University Hospital, Legon, has suspended its General Outpatient Department, Specialist Clinics and Pharmacy counselling services following the ongoing industrial action by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

In a public notice issued on Wednesday, August 12, the hospital announced that the affected services would be suspended from Thursday, August 13, 2026, until further notice.

The hospital said the decision was necessitated by the ongoing GAUA strike, which has disrupted administrative operations at public universities.

It, however, assured the public that its Emergency Department remains operational and will continue to provide care to patients requiring urgent medical attention.

GAUA began the industrial action over concerns about the implementation of its conditions of service and other outstanding matters relating to the welfare of university administrators.

The association has been demanding the resolution of issues it says remain unresolved despite several engagements with the relevant authorities.

The strike has disrupted administrative activities at public universities, prompting various institutions to introduce measures to minimise its impact on their operations and services.

Meanwhile, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is expected to meet with representatives of GAUA this week as part of efforts to address the concerns underpinning the industrial action and bring the strike to an end.
