The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has assigned a Cameroonian referee to officiate the crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off match between the Super Falcons and South Africa as both teams continue their quest to secure a ticket for the global competition.

CAF picked Aline Etong as the centre referee for the encounter, as well as Morocco’s Soukaina Hamdi and Mauritanian Mariem Chedad as the two assistant referees, also announcing Shahendia Ali of Egypt as the fourth official for the contest.

In a statement made available on Thursday, the body also disclosed that Fides Bangurambona, from Burundi, would act as the reserve assistant referee, while Lahlou Benbraham of Algeria would be the Video Assistant Referee, to be assisted by Morocco national, Zakaria Bouchtaoui, and Dorsaf  Ganquati of Tunisia, as his assistants.

The Super Falcons got to the supplementary play-off round after failing to reach the semi final of the Women’s African Cup of Nations, WAFCON, an automatic qualification spot for the Brazil 2027 World Cup, following their 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon, the Bafana Bafana also losing to hosts, 2-1 in the same round.

Both sides have met 26 times, with the Green and White country, massively dominating, winning 18 of those and South Africa winning three, in games which included WAFCON, World Cup and Olympic qualifiers as well as friendly games.

The match would kick off at 9pm, Thursday Nigeria time.
