Wa (U/WR), Aug. 13, GNA – The Upper West Regional Police Command has dismantled a suspected armed robbery syndicate operating in parts of the Upper West Region, arresting six suspected members, while two other suspects remain at large.

One of the suspects, Nasiru Abdul Rahman, 52, subsequently died at the Upper West Regional Hospital after reportedly sustaining injuries during a police operation.

According to a statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Francis Yiribaare, Upper West Regional Police Commander, the deceased sustained the injuries when he allegedly struggled with police officers and fell from a motorbike while being transported to a vehicle that was to convey him to the police station.

The statement said his remains had been deposited at the Upper West Regional Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The arrested suspects were identified as Amadu Moro, 35; Adama Yussif, 40; Idrissu Adama, 35; Korika Issaka, 20; Zakaria Brigi, 21; and Nasiru Abdul Rahman, 52, now deceased.

Police said five of the suspects were arrested on Saturday, August 8, 2026, while Nasiru Abdul Rahman was arrested on Monday, August 10, 2026.

The statement explained that the arrests followed months of intelligence-led and coordinated operations by the Command in response to an emerging pattern of armed robbery attacks in the region.

According to the Police, the suspects allegedly targeted victims, attacked them with machetes, and compelled them to disclose their Mobile Money (MoMo) Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), which were subsequently used to transfer funds from the victims’ accounts.

“The operation followed an emerging trend of armed robbery incidents in which victims were attacked, wounded with machetes and forced to disclose their Mobile Money (MoMo) Personal Identification Numbers (PINs), which were then used to transfer money from their accounts to the robbers’ MoMo accounts,” it explained.

Preliminary investigations, the Police said, have linked Adama Yussif, Amadu Moro, and the late Nasiru Abdul Rahman to a number of robbery incidents, including attacks at Kpenateng Junction on August 1, 2026; Kulkpara-Dapoha on June 19, 2026; Kpenateng Community on June 15 and May 23, 2026; and Piisi-Dapoha on March 27, 2026.

The Police said investigations had established that the suspects allegedly robbed victims of about GH¢22,070 in cash and siphoned an additional GH¢3,274 through Mobile Money transactions.

The statement added that seven mobile phones had been retrieved from the suspects and were undergoing forensic examination to aid ongoing investigations.

Meanwhile, the Police said two other suspects believed to be connected to the syndicate remained at large.

They were identified as Haruna, 30, alleged to be the armourer of the gang, and Amadu Mahamudu, 24, the son of the deceased suspect.

The Regional Command appealed to residents, particularly those in communities recently affected by robbery attacks, to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the Police.

The Police also called on the public to provide credible information that could lead to the arrest of the two wanted suspects and help prevent further criminal activities in the region.
