Abukuse has enjoyed a meteoric rise in Kenyan rugby since bursting onto the national scene. The former Bungoma High School student earned his maiden Kenya Sevens call-up under former head coach Damian McGrath for the 2022 Hong Kong Sevens before making his competitive debut later that year at the Dubai Sevens.
His selection followed an outstanding 2022 National Sevens Circuit campaign with Menengai Oilers, where he played a pivotal role in helping the Nakuru-based side clinch the overall title.
The explosive winger wasted little time making an impression on the international stage. During his debut tournament in Dubai, Abukuse scored a sensational try against South Africa, a moment that was voted among the tournament’s top seven tries and announced his arrival in elite sevens rugby.
Since then, he has established himself as one of the first names on the Shujaa team sheet. He represented Kenya at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and capped off the 2024 domestic sevens season as the National Sevens Circuit’s leading try scorer with an impressive 32 tries.
Abukuse also played a key role in Kenya’s successful campaign to regain promotion to the HSBC SVNS World Series. Although World Rugby later restructured the competition, the pacey back has remained an integral part of the national team setup.
His move to Westshore RFC offers another opportunity to further his development while adding international experience to the Canadian club.
Westshore currently sits third in the BC Rugby Men’s Premier League standings, having scored 506 points, while the club’s women’s Premier team has previously topped the league standings with 49 points.
