Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo says Ghana is committed to efforts to establish a single African market that will facilitate the movement of workers, goods and services across the continent.
He said greater integration among African countries would allow workers, businesses and goods to move more freely across the continent and create stronger economic opportunities for Africans.
The minister made the remarks at the Global Conference Human Resources Africa, held in Ghana in partnership with Asaase Radio, where discussions focused on strengthening Africa’s workforce and preparing it for the future of work.
The conference brought together stakeholders to discuss ways of strengthening Africa’s workforce and improving employment opportunities.
Pelpuo said the vision of a united Africa, including a common economic system, had been championed by Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
He stated that removing barriers between African countries would create conditions for people to move, work and trade across borders while strengthening the continent’s economic position.
The minister said discussions were also ongoing on proposals including an African currency, but achieving a single market would require commitment and agreement among African governments.
He added that the pace of implementation would depend largely on the willingness of countries to adopt and implement the necessary policies.
Pelpuo also highlighted the importance of increasing trade among African countries.
He said stronger intra-African trade could generate significant economic benefits and reduce the continent’s reliance on external markets.
He urged African countries to recognise trade as a key driver of economic development and work towards removing barriers that limit commerce among them.
