Just 10% of the German population was between 15 and 24 years old at the end of last year, with the figure even lower in the country’s eastern states, the Federal Statistical Office reported on Monday.

In the eastern state of Brandenburg, which surrounds the city-state of Berlin, young people aged 15 to 24 made up 8.8% of the population. This was followed by Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Saxony-Anhalt, both at 9.1%.

The highest proportions of young people are found in the city states of Bremen on 11.1% and Hamburg on 10.5%. The western states of Baden-Württemberg and Hesse are marginally above 10%, as is Berlin.

In the early 1980s, young people accounted for the largest share of the population.

The proportion of young people in Germany was slightly below the EU average of 10.7%, the statistical office said, citing figures from early 2025 and the EU statistical agency Eurostat.

Without immigrants and their descendants, the share of young people in Germany’s total population would be even lower.
