The Berko Gate And NDC

The expose about the one million dollar power scandal, now the biggest news in town, will demand extra work on the part of National Democratic Congress (NDC) spinners to bring under control.

It has been tagged ‘Berko Gate’ in dishonour of the former Goldman Sachs Executive, Asante Kwaku Berko, who orchestrated the bribery deal.

Like wildfire, it is raging uncontrollably as names, some holding important government positions, are being speculated by logical deductions. But who are they?

The times ahead will really be interesting. One thing is clear though: corruption is synonymous with the NDC as a political party, and hypocrisy a cornerstone of their tenure in government, records for which are contained in the vaults of the internet.

The previous scandals such as the airbus scandal for which the Special Prosecutor presented a clean bill of health to the President refer.

Here is to express gratitude to the US Attorney General, his team and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for unearthing the scandal which has earned us an unenviable place in the comity of corrupt nations.

It is heartbreaking why a government would agree to exploit the unfortunate power crisis to hit the nation.

The unwise ‘take or pay’ arrangement which left the nation with excess energy unattractive to prospective buyers in neighbouring countries cost us so much. Unknowing to us, so much had been shared among government officials. Where has morality fled to?

Most of the work regarding investigations have been executed already by the Yankees. All that local authorities starting from the Attorney General to the Office of the Special Prosecutor have to do, if they are sincere, is identify the individuals who partook in the sharing of the dirty booty and proceed from there.

It is amazing that to date neither invitation to help in investigations nor arrests have been made. Should we be surprised? After all, those involved belong to the ruling party and under such circumstances the law and, indeed, standards are varied as per the ‘Animal Kingdom’ setting.

We shall be bombarded with assortment of propaganda interventions by the government spinners as the days elapse, as more revelations pop up. The Attorney General has already served notice of chasing persons mentioned, but we can bet that is all there is to it.

The so-called Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) expedition comes nowhere near this one in terms of reach and significance.

Let them sing like canary birds those who know what happened, for the sake of mother Ghana. This nonsense must be addressed immediately.

We have heard the Office of the Special Prosecutor claiming to have collaborated with the FBI in unearthing the scandal.

Such self-aggrandisement should be reserved for kindergarten kids. Ghanaians for who such lies are intended are mature enough to minnow the thrash from the grains.

If indeed the foregone is veracious, why did the Special Prosecutor not act or even do one of his usual self-aggrandising press conferences to break the news?

For now, what Ghanaians are interested in is the release of names of persons implicated in the killer energy deal, not propaganda.

The names being mentioned in street gossips are big, and it will take unusual fortitude on the part of government to declassify this information.

We shall return.
