WEATHER: Disruptive rain and snow set to hit South Africa

Here’s the weather outlook for South Africa’s nine provinces.

The South African Weather Service has issued weather updates stating that snow, heavy rain and winds are expected in some provinces.

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS

IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS

A. Orange Level 6 Warning for Disruptive Snow resulting to disruptions to livelihood, major traffic disruptions and some communities temporary inaccessible is expected over Emalahleni, Sakhisizwe, Senqu, Elundiniand Matatiele Local Mmunicipalities of the Eastern Cape.

B. Yellow Level 2 Warning for Disruptive snow leading to localised traffic disruptions, isolated loss of livestock and crops and localised disruptions to services is expected in places over over Dr Beyers Naude, Raymond Mhlaba, Amahlathi, Intsika Yethu, Dr AB Xuma, Mhlontlo and Mzimvubu Local Municipalities, and Chris Hani Distyrict Municipality of the Eastern Cape, east and south of the Free State along the Lesotho border and the western parts of KwaZulu-Natal.

C. Yellow Level 2 Warning for Disruptive Rain leading to localised flooding of susceptible settlements, roads and bridges, is expected over Mpumalanga except the extreme western parts.

D. Yellow Level 2 Warning for Damaging Winds and Waves resulting in disruption of small harbours or ports, danger in navigation, disruption of coastal activities, damage to infrastructure and settlements and injuries and danger to life from flying debris are expected along the coast of KwaZulu-Natal.

E. Yellow Level 2 Warning for Damaging Winds resulting in damage to settlements (formal and informal), localized reduced visibility due to dust storms and localised damage to temporary structures is expected over northern parts of the West Coast District, and the Witzenberg Municipality of the Western Cape and.. over the Namakwa District except the north-eastern parts of Pofadder Municipality of the Northern Cape as well as the western parts of Mpumalanga.

F. Yellow Level 1 Warning for damaging winds leading to difficulty in navigation at sea is expected between Table Bay and Cape Agulhas from Tuesday morning until Wednesday afternoon (11-12/08/2026).

FIRE DANGER WARNINGS

Extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the Richtersveld Municipality.

ADVISORIES

Wet, very cold and windy conditions can be expected over the southern parts of Free State, Northern Cape, Gauteng and Mpumalanga as well as the interior of Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal where snowfalls are possible over the mountainous areas and rough seas along the coast. Farmers and the public in general are advised to take necessarily precautions.

Weather conditions and UVB forecast in South Africa’s provinces

Gauteng

Gauteng can expect cloudy and cold to very cold with scattered showers and rain.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Low

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga, the Place of the Rising Sun, can expect morning frost in places, otherwise cloudy and cold to very cold with scattered to widespread rain and showers.

Limpopo

In Limpopo, Cloudy and cool to cold with isolated to scattered rain and showers and rain but widespread in the south-east.

North West

North West, known as Bokone Bophirima in Setswana, can expect partly cloudy, windy and cool to cold, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers, except over the west.

Free State

In the Free State, cloudy, windy and cold to very cold, with isolated showers and thundershowers, but scattered over the far east.

Northern Cape

Partly cloudy, windy and cool to cold but fine in the north-west. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong easterly to south-easterly.

Western Cape

Cloudy to partly cloudy and cool to warm but cold over the north-eastern parts, with isolated rain and showers along the south coast in the morning. Light snow dust is possible for Beaufort West in the morning. The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong easterly to south-easterly, reaching gale along the south-west coast from the afternoon, becoming strong north-easterly along the south coast from the evening.

The expected UVB sunburn index is Very High

Eastern Cape

The Western half: Cloudy and cold to very cold with isolated showers and rain along the coast and adjacent interior, but scattered east of Port Elizabeth. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly, becoming easterly in the afternoon.

The Eastern half: Cloudy and very cold with scattered showers and rain, but widespread along the coast. Snowfall is expected over high-lying areas. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-easterly.

KwaZulu-Natal

Cloudy and cold to very cold with scattered showers and rain, and snow over the western high-ground. The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh southerly to southeasterly but strong in the north.

The expected UVB Sunburn Index is Low
