The latest Marvel film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, has officially delivered the biggest opening weekend in South African Box Office history, earning an impressive R44 million during its first weekend in cinemas.

The record-setting debut was confirmed by Sony Pictures South Africa, making it the biggest local cinema launch ever and continuing the film’s extraordinary global success.

You’ve made history.

Social media platforms have been flooded with spoiler-free reactions, fan theories and videos of packed cinema auditoriums over the opening weekend. Many moviegoers praised the emotional story, action sequences and the return of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker following the dramatic ending of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The film currently boasts a remarkable 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting overwhelmingly positive reactions from fans. For local cinemas, the record-breaking weekend is another encouraging sign that audiences continue to return to the big screen for major blockbuster releases after several challenging years for the cinema industry.

The blockbuster didn’t just dominate South African theatres.

Internationally, the film opened to an estimated $932 million (around R17 billion) worldwide, with roughly $360 million coming from North America alone. Those figures were enough to edge past Avengers: Endgame as the biggest domestic opening weekend in Box Office history, although Endgame still holds the overall global opening record with $1.2 billion.

In comparison, Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey,  which released two weeks before Brand New Day, saw an opening weekend Box Office of $264.1M worldwide, smashing several records in its own right.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day also set new benchmarks for the biggest Thursday preview screenings, the biggest opening day and Sony Pictures’ biggest film launch to date. With numbers still being finalised, the film has already established itself as the biggest cinema release of 2026 so far.

The latest chapter picks up after Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which Peter Parker erased the world’s memory of his identity. Living in isolation and trying to rebuild his life, Peter attempts to reconnect with MJ and his best friend Ned. However, his plans are quickly derailed as a dangerous new threat emerges, forcing Spider-Man back into action to protect New York City.

The film stars:

  • Tom Holland
  • Zendaya
  • Jacob Batalon
  • Sadie Sink
  • Mark Ruffalo
  • Florence Pugh
  • Jon Bernthal

While Spider-Man has claimed the spotlight for now, Marvel’s biggest competition may still come from within its own universe.

The studio is expected to release Avengers: Doomsday later this year,   setting up another potentially huge battle at the global Box Office. Industry analysts believe both films could finish among the highest-grossing releases of 2026.

For now, however, Brand New Day has firmly established itself as the film everyone is talking about. As Sony Pictures South Africa confirmed, the superhero adventure has officially become the country’s biggest cinema opening ever, while internationally it continues to break records.
