IShowSpeed

Popular American streamer, IShowSpeed, performed during the World Cup closing ceremony, before the final, wearing a bracelet with Ghana’s red, gold and green colours on his wrist.

A detail that has not gone unnoticed, especially considering the strong connection that Speed has shown with the country several times during his travels to Africa.

The gesture caught the attention of many fans, reflecting the strong connection he has built with Ghana during his visits to the country.

During his tour of Ghana in January 2026, IShowSpeed was officially given the traditional Ghanaian name Barima Kofi Akuffo during a grand naming ceremony in Akropong. The royal title, bestowed by the King of Akuapem, symbolises a hero, champion, and great man.

Guided by Ghanaian YouTuber Wode Maya, IShowSpeed’s highly publicised trip featured immense cultural immersion. Before receiving his honorary Akan name—which recognises his Friday birthdate (“Kofi”)—he underwent traditional cleansing rituals and was gifted royal items like a gold chain, Kente cloth, and traditional slippers. The event featured chiefs, queen mothers, and massive crowds of enthusiastic fans.

The name Barima Kofi Akuffo carries profound meaning within the Akan culture. “Barima” signifies a brave, strong, and noble man, often translated as “warrior” or “hero.”

“Kofi” indicates he was born on a Friday, symbolising fertility and peacefulness. “Akuffo” is a family name in the Akan tradition. Together, the name embodies strength, resilience, and a formal link to the community.
