The Ga Traditional Council has directed all shops, markets and commercial establishments in Accra to close from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, to allow residents to participate in the National General Cleaning Exercise.

The directive, issued on behalf of the Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, forms part of efforts to improve sanitation and restore cleanliness across the capital.

According to a statement signed by the Registrar of the Ga Traditional Council, Evelyn Amewotse, the exercise is being undertaken in partnership with the government, the Office of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, the Mayor of Accra and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

The Council said the exercise is aimed at mobilising residents to clean their surroundings, clear choked drains and improve environmental sanitation.

To ensure widespread participation, the Council directed that all shops, markets and commercial entities in Accra remain closed during the exercise.

“To ensure our streets are purged of filth and our drains restored to health, the Ga Traditional Council orders that all shops, markets, and commercial entities within Accra remain closed between 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on both days,” the statement said.

The directive applies to all businesses except emergency services, essential medical facilities and authorised sanitation personnel.

The Ga Mantse also urged residents to support the initiative by setting aside commercial activities and taking part in the clean-up exercise.

“Let every citizen rise to this call with discipline. When we cease our trading to cleanse our land, we secure our future and uphold the dignity of our people. A clean Accra is the strength of the Ga State and the pride of our nation,” the statement added.

The Council emphasised that maintaining a clean environment is a shared responsibility and encouraged all residents to actively participate in the exercise to help improve sanitation, protect public health and prevent flooding.

It concluded with a call for collective action under the campaign message: “Clean communities, secure lives.”
