The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to curbing the proliferation of illegal firearms, saying every weapon destroyed represents a life potentially saved and another step towards a safer and more secure Ghana.
Speaking at the National Arms Destruction Ceremony to mark the United Nations Small Arms Destruction Initiative, the Minister said the exercise demonstrates Ghana’s resolve to combat armed violence and protect its citizens.
“This destruction ceremony is about more than destroying firearms — it is about saving lives. It demonstrates our clear determination to protect lives and preserve the safety and security of our nation,” he said.
Drawing inspiration from Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, the Minister quoted the late statesman as saying: “The forces that unite us are far greater than the superimposed influences that keep us apart.”
He said the quote remains relevant today, as it underscores the importance of national unity, peace and collective action in addressing security threats.
According to Mr Muntaka, every firearm destroyed removes a potential threat from society, reduces the risk of violent crime and reinforces the country’s commitment to maintaining law and order.
“Every weapon destroyed represents a threat removed from our communities, a life potentially saved, and another step towards a safer Ghana. It sends a strong message that Ghana has no place for illegal arms, violence or criminality,” he stressed.
The Interior Minister noted that the theme for this year’s ceremony, “Silencing the Guns Through Destruction for a Peaceful and Gun Violence-Free Ghana,” reflects the government’s determination to promote peaceful coexistence and ensure that dialogue prevails over conflict.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s security architecture through improved capacity for the security services, tighter border controls and intensified efforts to prevent the inflow of illicit small arms into the country.
Mr Muntaka also called on the public to support the work of security agencies by remaining vigilant and reporting suspicious activities that could threaten national security.
“Every gun destroyed is a victory for peace. Together, let us continue working towards a safer, more peaceful and more secure Ghana for all,” he said.
The National Arms Destruction Ceremony forms part of Ghana’s participation in the United Nations Small Arms Destruction Initiative, which seeks to reduce the circulation of illicit weapons, curb armed violence and enhance public safety through the destruction of confiscated and obsolete firearms.
