A nationwide seven-day Bible reading event has been announced as part of activities marking Ghana’s 70th anniversary celebrations, bringing together Christians from various denominations and institutions to reflect on the nation’s history and achievements and prepare spiritually to spark an awakening through revival.

The initiative, being organised jointly by Equity & Access Foundation LBG (EAF) and Gap Junction Ministries Inc. (GJM), in partnership with churches across the sixteen regions of Ghana, is expected to attract participation from churches, Christian faith-based organisations, educational institutions, and Believers nationwide. The event aims to promote national unity, moral renewal, and prayers for Ghana’s continued peace and development.

Speaking ahead of the event, Doreen J. Alexander, a representative of Equity & Access Foundation LBG and Gap Junction Ministries Inc., stated that the 70th anniversary presents an opportunity not only to celebrate national milestones but also to seek divine guidance for the country’s future.

She noted that in Daniel 9:2, the Prophet Daniel understood by the books (Jeremiah 29:10) the number of years specified by the Lord through Jeremiah the Prophet that God would accomplish 70 years in the desolations of Jerusalem. “Therefore, Daniel interceded for the liberation of his people before the 70 years were up, according to Daniel 9:3,” she added. She explained that Daniel had to read the books to know what was written in them before standing in the gap for their liberation.

According to the organisers, the Bible-reading event forms part of broader commemorative activities designed to celebrate Ghana’s journey since attaining independence while encouraging citizens to reflect on the values that have sustained the nation over the decades.

The seven-day programme will feature chronological Bible readings, prayer sessions, and reflections focused on themes including national unity, peace, good governance, economic progress, youth empowerment, social transformation and revival. Participants will be encouraged to engage in both personal and group readings, with churches expected to host special sessions throughout the week.

Significance

Organisers say the initiative recognises the significant contribution of the Christian faith and religious institutions to Ghana’s national development. Over the years, churches have played key roles in education, healthcare delivery, social welfare, community development, and other initiatives, helping to shape the nation’s social and moral fabric.

“This programme provides a platform for Ghanaians to come together in reflection and prayer as we commemorate an important chapter in our nation’s history,” a spokesperson for the organising committee said. “It is an opportunity to express gratitude for the progress made over the years and to pray for wisdom, unity, and prosperity in the decades ahead.”

Patron’s comments

Leaders of Christian communities in Ghana have welcomed the initiative and called on the nation’s Christian communities to participate actively. They believe the event will provide an avenue for fostering national cohesion and encouraging a shared commitment to the Christian values necessary for sustainable development.

Officials of Equity & Access Foundation LBG and Gap Junction Ministries Inc. expressed confidence that the programme would strengthen partnerships among Christian communities while encouraging collective action towards national development. They emphasised that the event is intended to inspire citizens to embrace values such as integrity, service, compassion, and accountability.

Observers have described the Bible-reading event as a timely initiative, particularly at a period when many citizens are reflecting on the nation’s progress and the challenges that remain. While Ghana has made significant strides in democratic governance, economic development, and social advancement over the past seven decades, many believe there is a continuing need to strengthen national unity, accountability, and civic responsibility.

Mock run

The mock run for this event will happen virtually before the close of this year to prepare the grounds for the main event next year, which will be at a physical location to be determined. The virtual readers will be heads of Christian faith-based organisations who embrace one or more of the six categories of the social ministry of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ (Matthew 25:35-36), namely: providing for the hungry, thirsty, strangers, the naked, the sick and those in prisons.

To ensure broad participation, the organisers are also leveraging digital platforms to distribute reading materials and engage Ghanaians both at home and abroad in the seven-day event. Online resources and social media campaigns are expected to complement activities taking place in churches and communities across the country.

The event

The programme is expected to follow a chronological reading structure according to the arrangement of the books of the Bible. The opening ceremony, which will not be a part of the seven days of Bible readings, will bring together heads of churches, Christian faith-based organisations, and institutions. Other participants at the opening ceremony will be politicians, sportsmen, professionals, and Believers from all walks of life. Selected participants will share a brief message with the audience.

Readers for the seven-day event will be representatives of targeted Christian communities and secular ones whose heads are Believers. The event will conclude on the seventh day with an hour of national prayers dedicated to Ghana’s future and closing remarks from representatives of the fivefold Christian ministries in Ghana.

As Ghana marks 70 years of independence, the seven-day Bible-reading event is expected to serve as both a spiritual and national reflection, reinforcing the role of the Christian faith, collective responsibility, and shared values in shaping the country’s future.

Heads or representatives of Christian faith-based organisations, educational institutions, churches, parliamentarians, professionals, heads of companies, and Believers interested in reading at the Ghana Reads The Bible event are encouraged to register for free via the QR code provided by the organisers.
