The Ghana Police Service has arrested Eric Afoakwa, also known as “Chad”, a convicted fraudster who had been on the run for seven years after being sentenced to eight years in prison for money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, forgery of official documents, and tax evasion.

Afoakwa was convicted in absentia by the Accra High Court in 2019 on five out of six counts.

The court, presided over by Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa, ordered him to serve an eight-year prison sentence concurrently and directed him to refund $132,660.00 to the complainant in the case.

Following the judgment, Afoakwa went into hiding and was declared wanted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office, which appealed to the public for information on his whereabouts.

On Monday, July 6, 2026, acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit arrested the convict while he was preparing to leave the country.

The Police said he will be handed over to EOCO to facilitate the enforcement of the court’s judgment.

The Ghana Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant state agencies to ensure that fugitives from justice are arrested and face the full rigours of the law.
