The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that cocaine valued at more than $300 million seized at Pedu Junction in the Central Region has been destroyed following a court order.
According to the Minister, authorities followed due legal procedures before disposing of the narcotic substance and have provided video evidence of the destruction to Parliament’s Assurance Committee as proof of compliance.
Muntaka made this known when he appeared before the committee on Tuesday, July 7, where he responded to questions regarding the status of the seized cocaine and the prosecution of persons linked to the case.
He explained that narcotic substances cannot be destroyed without a court order and assured the committee that the required approval was obtained before the disposal process was carried out.
The Interior Minister also disclosed that the substantive case involving the seized cocaine is still before the court, with prosecution ongoing.
He said the last court sitting was scheduled for April 30, while the next hearing, initially set for June 29, was affected by the floods that occurred on that day. The parties are now awaiting a new court date.
“So, the prosecution is ongoing, and we want to assure you that once we secure prosecution, we can update you on that,” he added.
