Hundreds of people have been displaced in the country’s Western Region following days of torrential rain that triggered severe flooding across several communities. Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation reported that the floods have submerged homes, farmlands, roads, and public facilities, leaving families homeless and in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.
Affected residents say that illegal mining is partly to blame for the catastrophic scale of the flooding. They said the mining activities have severely degraded the land and obstructed natural waterways, drastically increasing the communities’ vulnerability to heavy rains.

Aid officials have warned that prank calls and the circulation of fake flood videos are disrupting rescue operations and diverting critical emergency resources from genuine flood victims. A statement issued by the Greater Accra Regional Minister said the development is particularly worrying at a time when emergency personnel are working around the clock to rescue stranded residents.
