Kogi Govt. rallies military to dislodge terrorist from forests

To prevent the movement and expansion of terrorist networks across state boundaries, the Kogi State Government has said it is intensifying support for military operations aimed at dislodging criminal elements from forested areas in the state.

The government said Kogi’s position as the natural gateway linking northern and southern Nigeria makes it critical in efforts to prevent the expansion and movement of terrorist networks across regions.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, who disclosed this on Wednesday, said the state would continue to leverage its strategic location to support security agencies with logistics, intelligence and operational backing.

“The state remains determined to ensure that its territory does not serve as a transit route, operational base or safe haven for terrorists and bandits seeking to threaten neighbouring states and communities,” Fanwo said.

The statement follows the successful rescue of five kidnapped victims by troops of the 12 Brigade, Nigerian Army, during sustained operations in forested areas of the state.

The government said the rescue reflects ongoing pressure on criminal enclaves through coordinated air and ground offensives, which have forced terrorists to abandon their hideouts in several locations.

It noted that the operation builds on earlier military successes in Bunu District of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area, where troops neutralised terrorists, rescued victims and destroyed criminal camps.

Preliminary accounts from the rescued victims indicated they were abandoned by their abductors who fled under heavy military pressure, further confirming the impact of the ongoing security operations.

Kogi State Government commended the troops of the 12 Brigade Nigerian Army, alongside personnel of the Nigerian Air Force, Nigeria Police Force, DSS, NSCDC, vigilante groups and hunters, for their coordination and professionalism.

It also appreciated President Bola Tinubu, the National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and service chiefs for their support in strengthening counter-terrorism operations nationwide.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo congratulated the rescued victims and directed the Ministry of Health to provide full medical and psychological care, while urging residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible information.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the offensive until all criminal enclaves are dismantled and lasting peace is restored across Kogi State.
