Earlier this year, Born Free Head of Communications and PR, Amanda Poole-Connor, travelled to Kenya and met with Alice Kamau for the first time – this is how it went.

Working in Kenya has meant so much to me since I joined Born Free five years ago. My first visit to the country, seeing our project work up close, meeting our incredible teams, and experiencing the wildlife we are working so hard to protect, was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

When I travelled to Kenya again in March this year, one of the moments I was most looking forward to was meeting our new Country Director, Alice Kamau. I was eager to understand the person who will help shape the vision of Born Free’s work in Kenya over the coming years.

I was not disappointed.

Alice is an impressive leader; thoughtful, focused, and deeply committed. She brings exactly the expertise that Born Free needs in Kenya. She understands strategy and vision, but just as importantly, she understands impact and what it truly takes to deliver meaningful and lasting change for wildlife and for the communities living alongside it.

I was delighted to sit down with her for an interview for our upcoming Wild Life magazine. We spoke about her personal journey, including how the film Born Free influenced her, and how we carry that legacy forward today. We reflected on how much has changed since 1966, when the film was first released, and how different Kenya is now from the one reflected on screen.

Today, Born Free’s work in Kenya is proudly Kenyan led, with teams working in the field who bring deep local knowledge, lived experience, and an innate understanding of what is needed to deliver real impact. Under Alice’s leadership, that expertise is being shaped into a clear and ambitious vision for the future.

I am delighted to share this interview with you.
