Paul Yandoh, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to intervene in the ongoing prosecutions against the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi).
During an interview shared by Prime Rakon via X on June 15, 2026, Paul Yandoh went on his knees and begged President Mahama to intervene in the matter.
He asserted that if President Mahama does not intervene in the matter, Wontumi, who is running for the NPP national chairmanship position, is destined to be jailed over the crimes he has been accused of.
“We know that there were excesses in some of the cases, and if you don’t come in, it would only end with… We are on our knees, begging; please intervene in this matter.
“Don’t let Wontumi go to prison; I’m on my knees begging, Mr President. We know you are a father for all; please don’t let Wontumi go, don’t let him go (to prison). We are on our knees begging,” he said in the Twi dialect.
He reiterated, “Please intervene so that Wontumi would not go to prison. We know that if you speak, the matter will come to an end. Mr President, have mercy on Wontumi.”
Earlier, in an interview on Okay FM on June 12, 2026, Yandoh said that, judging from conversations surrounding Wontumi’s ongoing trial, with judgment scheduled for July 3, 2026, and comments made by his lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, he believes Wontumi may be jailed.
Despite this, he insisted Wontumi would still win the election even from prison.
Paul Yandoh added that if Wontumi wins the election while incarcerated, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government would have no choice but to release him.
“When you listen to lawyer Appiah-Kubi, he says if the court follows the law and not public opinion, Wontumi will not be guilty of any crime. So, if a lawyer says this, is it not prison that you are going to?
“That would mean Wontumi will be the first national chairman to be elected while in prison. And the NDC government will have no option but to release him. We will vote for him, and we will vote for him even in prison,” Yandoh emphasised.
Meanwhile, the High Court in Accra has set July 3, 2026, for judgment in one of the cases against Wontumi, where he is accused of being involved in illegal mining activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.
Wontumi has picked former Member of Parliament Samuel Atta Akyea as his lawyer for the case after his initial lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, also a former MP, opted out of the case.
