Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey has been denied a Canadian visa, putting his participation in the Black Stars’ opening match against Panama in doubt.
According to reports carried by Joy Sports and confirmed by FIFA, the experienced midfielder is expected to miss Ghana’s Group Stage clash scheduled for June 17 due to the visa issue.
“FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana’s team base camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government. FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas. As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country,” FIFA stated in a release.
Partey, one of Ghana’s most influential players, has been a key figure in the national team’s journey to the World Cup and was expected to play a central role in Carlos Queiroz’s plans for the tournament. His potential absence would leave a major gap in the Black Stars’ midfield, where his leadership, defensive discipline, and passing range have been vital.
The development comes at a crucial time as Ghana finalises preparations for its World Cup campaign. The coaching staff may now be forced to consider alternative options in midfield should Partey remain unavailable for the opening fixture.
