A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has questioned whether Nigeria’s political leaders are genuinely committed to rescuing the nation and improving the lives of ordinary citizens.
Odigie-Oyegun made the remarks over the weekend during a telephone interview with Daily Trust in Benin City.
He stated that the daily wave of defections, resignations, and carpet-crossing driven by political disagreements indicates that something is fundamentally wrong with the nation’s political system.
According to him, it appears as though the political class has been infected with a “virus,” as their actions and behavior consistently fail to reflect the best interests of the masses.
“If they were genuinely committed to rescuing the nation, many of the developments currently happening as we prepare for the 2027 general elections wouldn’t have arisen,” he said.
Odigie-Oyegun noted that instead of political maneuvering, national efforts should center entirely on rescuing the country from its current state of economic hardship and insecurity.
“The political class is not behaving in a manner that indicates it is truly dedicated to salvaging the condition of this country,” he added.

He challenged the opposition to deeply examine their motives and ask themselves whether they are truly dedicated to saving the nation and bringing relief to citizens who are currently struggling to afford even a single meal a day.
However, he expressed optimism that despite these predicaments, the opposition is fully capable of wrestling power from the ruling party—provided that the system and state institutions ensure a level playing field and total fairness.
