Concerned by the worsening economic hardship across the country, the Aredu Development and Empowerment Foundation has distributed food items and clothing to persons with disabilities and vulnerable youths in Osogbo, Osun State.
Speaking at the event, the convener of the foundation, Mr Muritala Adebayo, said the rising cost of living, unemployment and insecurity had made survival increasingly difficult for persons with disabilities, many of whom face daily challenges relating to healthcare, education, mobility and basic welfare.
He explained that the outreach formed part of the organisation’s humanitarian efforts aimed at providing relief and restoring hope to vulnerable members of society.
The foundation also called on governments at all levels, corporate organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to intensify support for persons with disabilities amid the prevailing economic challenges in the country.
According to Adebayo, more than 40 beneficiaries received food supplies and clothing during the exercise, which was designed to promote inclusion, dignity and community support.
He stressed the need for stronger partnerships and collective action to address the welfare needs of persons living with disabilities and disadvantaged youths across Nigeria.
Adebayo also appealed to donors, volunteers and organisations to support the foundation through financial contributions, equipment donations, skills acquisition initiatives and strategic partnerships.
“We believe that supporting vulnerable people is not just charity, but a responsibility that promotes justice, inclusion and economic empowerment,” he said.
He further appreciated sponsors and partners, including Oguntolu Akinlana Osunmurewa, for contributing to the success of the outreach programme.
One of the beneficiaries, Adeleke Adebambo, commended the foundation for remembering persons living with disabilities during the current economic difficulties.
He urged the government to move beyond promises by implementing policies and programmes that would create an enabling environment for persons with disabilities.
Adebambo noted that many disabled persons still face neglect and limited opportunities despite ongoing advocacy efforts.
The foundation reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining interventions that provide practical assistance and empowerment opportunities for persons with disabilities and youths in Nigeria and the diaspora.
“We rise by lifting others,” the foundation stated.
