The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has distributed 50 calibrated weighing scales for free to traders in Techiman to promote fair trade, protect consumers, and ensure accurate measurement in markets.

The distribution, carried out in partnership with Physikalisch?Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Germany’s National Metrology Institute, formed part of activities marking the 2026 World Metrology Day.

Speaking during the handing over of the scales at the World Metrology Day grand event held in Techiman on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, Dr. Awal Mohammed, Deputy Director?General in-charge of Operations at the GSA’s, said the scales were meant to support traders and help them carry out their businesses in all honesty.

“We are here to mark World Metrology Day, and part of what we are doing is to give traders scales that have been verified and calibrated,” he said.

“When the scales are accurate, both the trader and the consumer win,” he added.

The donation forms part of an ongoing collaboration between GSA and PTB to strengthen Ghana’s national metrology system and support local economies.

PTB has been instrumental in supporting technical systems that joins Ghana’s practices with global measurement standards.

Mr. Evans Asiedu, the Director of Metrology at the GSA, said the initiative was not just about giving out scales but rather about building trust in measurement and laying the foundation for fair trade in Ghana.

Traders who benefited from the distribution expressed excitement and appreciation to the GSA and its partners, saying the equipment would significantly improve their businesses.

World Metrology Day, celebrated every year on May 20, spotlights the importance of measurement in innovation, trade, and everyday life.

This year’s celebration was held on the theme: “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making”.

Activities that marked the Day in Techiman included market sensitisation programmes, free verification of weighing instruments and medical devices and exhibition of products.
