“I wanted Otto Addo to stay” – Mahatma Otoo

Former Black Stars striker Mahatma Otoo has admitted he wished former Ghana coach Otto Addo had remained in charge of the national team until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the recent coaching transition involving the Black Stars, Otoo revealed his disappointment over Otto Addo’s dismissal, although he acknowledged the decision to appoint experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz.

“I was hoping they would keep Otto Addo until after the World Cup but unfortunately they’ve sacked him for an experienced coach,” Otoo told ghanasportspage.com

The former Accra Hearts of Oak SC forward, however, urged Ghanaians to remain united behind the current technical team despite the change.

According to him, expectations for the tournament should remain realistic, with the immediate target being progression beyond the group stage rather than winning the competition outright.

“We can’t say we are going to win the World Cup,” he stated.

“What the fans are expecting is to have a good tournament and not exit in the group stages.”

Otoo further appealed to supporters to rally behind both the players and the new coach as Ghana prepares for football’s biggest stage.

“We know we won’t win the World Cup but let’s support the team and the coach. I want us to go past the group stage, at least,” he added.

Ghanaians are hoping for an improved performance with Carlos Queiroz in charge ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following disappointments in recent tournaments.
